on writing - ernest hemingway

I learned never to empty the well of my writing, but always to stop
when there was still something there in the deep part of the well,
and let it refill at night from the springs that fed it.

The first draft of everything is shit.

I write one page of masterpiece to ninety-one pages of shit. I try
to put the shit in the wastebasket.

In order to write about life first you must live it.

A writer should write what he has to say and not speak it.

By JM Hillman

If a writer of prose knows enough about what he is writing about,
he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is
writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly
as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of
an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water.

The most solid advice for a writer is this, I think: Try to learn to
breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you
sleep really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive
with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And
when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will
be dead soon enough.

As a writer, you should not judge, you should understand.
